Gaomaxi (高马溪), not to be confused with Gaomaerxi (the company or the area), was a small company which, despite their name, mostly made teas with Furongshan material (Furongshan is also where their factory was located). My first experience with this brand was back in 2021 when I had a Malaysian stored 2013 fuzhuan of theirs which I liked a lot. Since then I didn’t hear much about this brand again until last year, when I noticed that many of the teas Professor Cai Zhengan had made under his own brand had in fact been produced by Gaomaxi, including teas from his highly regarded “源头茶” series.

This 2014 fuzhuan is made with gongjian-grade leaves and was hand-pressed into 900g bricks. While not overly complex, it has a deep and lingering taste profile which I like a lot. Berries, some vanilla, a bit of malt and some woodiness, with a warming and comfortable body feel. It benefits from being pushed a bit. A very good representation of the “Furongshan profile” and an interesting companion to the 2021 Guojin “Benggeng” Qianliangcha for those of you who have had that.

Note: This tea contains golden flowers (Jinhua/金花) which may have been inoculated using wheat flour. Individuals with Celiac Disease or severe gluten allergies should exercise caution.
